You can’t judge a book by its cover, but you have to judge a festival by its poster. Does it look interesting? Fun? Local? Does it look like art I’d want to hang in my house? Does it look better than the stuff in my house? Do I feel the need to check out T-shirts that look like it and rub elbows with other people just as intrigued? Ideally, one should look at a festival poster and instantly say, “I want to go there. Today. NOW!”
New Braunfels Parks and Recreation did a good thing when they got with Jason Braun of Ammo Advertising to set the tone for Wein & Saengerfest with his bold and vibrant visions of downtown. “They donate the artwork each year,” says Parks Director Stacey Laird-Dicke. “Each year the poster is of the plaza from a different angle.”

So now you have to stop by the table that sells posters and check them all out and figure which street is featured for 2010 without your GPS App. Lots left over from last year’s Wein und SwineFluFest ‘09. (Remember the Comal County quarantine that canceled this shindig?) These posters are merely an amuse-bouche meant to tease your palate before the feast that is Wein & Saengerfest. And they work.
The menu sampling includes wine and beer tasting, continuous live music, a Chef’s Showdown, an art market, children’s activities, New Braunfels Farm-to-Market, and a Grape Stop a’la Lucy. Wine pairings are from 20 Texas vineyards and a special presentation of German Rieslings and Pinot gris.
If your idea of buying a good bottle of wine means that the label must match your kitchen décor then you may want to consider a brief class at Weinstein University. From Wine 101 to Chocolate to Live For you will at least learn a vocabulary word or two that you can toss around at the next dinner party. There’s got to be more to it than ‘fruity’ or ‘grapey.’ (Maybe a “late harvest muscadine with a prickly body.” Anything but ‘grapey’.)
For those of you who didn’t have to look up ‘amuse-bouche’ you will love the Chef’s Showdown at 5:00. Amateur cooks will be presented with a mystery basket of ingredients (with wine, of course) and present their masterpieces to celebrity judges. Radio KNBT’s Dave Ferguson will provide flavorful commentary as local cooks vie for der Spitzenkoch, or Top Chef.
No feast, or Fest, would be complete without dessert. The Spazmatics are serving it up 80’s style at 7:30 by the plaza. There will be dancing in the street with purple grape stained feet and big smiles all around. You know you have wanted to do this ever since you saw the cool posters around town. Don’t worry. May 1st is almost here.
